Wetland and Environmental Education through Project Webfoot
Educating youth about wetlands is a key part of Ducks Unlimited Canada’s (DUC) wetland conservation mission. That’s why DUC has developed Project Webfoot for schools.
Project Webfoot is an international, interdisciplinary wetland education program. Its goal is to teach today’s students —who are tomorrow’s decision-makers and conservation leaders—about the tremendous value of wetland habitats.

Across Canada, Project Webfoot’s main focus is Grade 4 to 6. Through Project Webfoot, DUC provides classes with kits of exciting and engaging in-class learning materials, as well as wetland field trips.
This is made possible with the support of generous sponsors who wish to help students learn more about wetlands and the environment. Learn more about how you can sponsor classes in your area.
Project Webfoot doesn’t stop at elementary school. DUC offers lots of information and educational resources for student and teachers of other grade levels, including free lesson plans.

The education materials and programs offered through Project Webfoot are curriculum-compatible across Canada (based on guidelines established in the Common Framework of Science Learning Outcomes; Pan-Canadian Protocol for Collaboration on School Curriculum published in 1997).
Since DUC began wetland education in 1997, over 244,000 students have participated nationally. In addition, the programs and materials have received an annual teacher approval rating of 98 per cent.
Interpretive Centres
DUC wetland interpretive centres are great places for classroom and public education. These centres can be found at:
- Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba (in partnership with the Government of Manitoba)
- along the Saint John River in Fredericton
- Greenwing Legacy Interpretive Centre and Wetlands features DUC's newest Interpretive Centre, as well as demonstration wetlands, nature trails with interpretive signage, all within the exciting Shubenacadie Provincial Wildlife Park.
- Bow Habitat Station in Calgary in partnership with the Government of Alberta
- George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary near Vancouver in partnership with the British Columbia Waterfowl Society.
Outdoor Classroom
High Schools interested in longer term enrichment and action projects focused on wetlands can partner with DUC to create a Wetland Centre of Excellence. These outdoor classrooms offer students a wide variety of cross-curricular activities, funded by program partners.
Online Programs
DUC has partnered with ePALs and Green Street to offer wetland and environmental education programs.
