Scientific Research
Leadership in the science of wetland conservation is one key to saving our wetlands for tomorrow - today.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is committed to conserving one of Canada’s greatest resources, wetlands, for waterfowl, other wildlife and people. DUC relies on scientific research to guide its conservation programs.
The Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research (IWWR) directs, evaluates and modifies DUC’s conservation programs and practices so that DUC can most effectively meet the conservation needs of waterfowl. This union of science and conservation sets DUC apart from other non-government conservation organizations in Canada.
As DUC’s respected research arm, IWWR supports wetland conservation in 4 broad areas:
- Research to ensure that conservation investments are effective and efficient.
- Find answers for species or ecosystems in trouble, including sea ducks, lesser scaup and northern pintails.
- Establish the value to society of ecological goods and services (the value of wetlands in an economic and societal sense).
- Nurture the next generation of conservation biologists.
Using habitat conservation, education and helping to develop public policy in conjunction with our scientific research, DUC is conserving our valuable wetlands.
Unfortunately, wetlands continue to vanish.
As much as 70 per cent of Canada’s wetlands have been lost in some areas of the country. We need to act now to stop wetland loss. Learn more about how you can help conserve Canada’s wetlands for tomorrow…today!
