The Duke of Edinburgh to Visit Ducks Unlimited Canada Conservation Project and Reception
His Royal Highness will dedicate project and present awards in celebration of conservation
Regina, Sask., May 16, 2005—His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Ducks Unlimited Canada’s (DUC) McKell Wascana Conservation Project and attend a DUC reception in Regina, Sask., on Friday, May 20, as part of the Royal Visit to Canada. On hand to greet His Royal Highness will be DUC president John R. Messer.
“It’s a great honour for DUC to welcome The Duke of Edinburgh to a DUC conservation project and reception,” said Messer. “His Royal Highness has done a great deal for conservation, and it’s great to have his support for our work of protecting wetlands and native habitats, more of which are lost on a daily basis in Saskatchewan, Alberta and across Canada.” DUC, Canada’s leading wetland conservation company, works to conserve wetlands and their associated habitats, and has positively influenced over 24 million acres of habitat in Canada.
At the McKell Wascana project, The Duke of Edinburgh will officially dedicate the project by unveiling a project plaque, and will plant native grass seeds with a student from a Grade 4 class at W.S. Hawrylak School as part of future revegetation and naturalization work at the project.
Once completed, the McKell Wascana project will include a floating dock, a central plaza and over four kilometres of interpretive trails. The project will become an ‘outdoor classroom’ where students can come to learn through DUC’s curriculum-based education program, which aims to teach youth about the importance of wetland habitats.
After visiting the McKell Wascana project, The Duke of Edinburgh will attend a DUC reception at the Wascana Country Club and present The Duke of Edinburgh Habitat Conservation Awards to landowners from both Saskatchewan and Alberta who have made long-term contributions to wetland conservation.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to a DUC project and reception highlights the importance of conservation. In celebration of the centennials of Alberta and Saskatchewan, DUC asks that people ‘put their hearts into habitat’ and support conservation by becoming a Centennial Sponsor or entering into a conservation easement. This will help to ensure that wetlands remain a part of the landscapes of Alberta and Saskatchewan, allowing people and wildlife to enjoy the many benefits of these precious habitats for the next hundred years.
Since 1938, DUC has conserved, restored and managed wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These habitats—nature’s water filters—also benefit other wildlife and people.
