Ducks Unlimited Canada Elects New President

DUC National Office, Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., June 13, 2007—Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is pleased to announce that Mr. C. Neil Downey, CA was elected as the non-profit organization’s 38th president at its national board of directors meeting held June 9-10 in Victoria, B.C.

Mr. Downey has served on the volunteer board of the wetland conservation organization from 1988-1990 and again from 1995 to the present. He was elected vice-president in 2005. Mr. Downey brings a wealth of leadership experience in business and the non-profit sector to his new position.

Mr. Downey received his CA designation in 1971 and founded the firm Downey Swainson Roth LLP, located in Red Deer, Alta.

Mr. Downey has been a DUC volunteer for nearly 30 years. In 1981 Mr. Downey was instrumental in founding the Red Deer DU committee, serving as chair in its second year. He served as zone and district chair before moving on to fill the position of Alberta provincial chair from 1988-1990.  During his tenure as Alberta’s provincial volunteer chair, Mr. Downey also served on the national board of directors. He was re-elected to the board in 1995, chairing the membership and revenue committee until his appointment to the position of vice-president.

Currently residing near Red Deer, Mr. Downey has many interests, including horses and antique automobiles. He is an avid outdoorsman, spending much of his leisure time in the pursuit of hunting and fishing opportunities.

Ducks Unlimited Canada is a private, not-for-profit, Canadian organization. Since 1938, DUC has conserved, restored and managed wetlands and associated habitats for waterfowl, other wildlife and people. DUC’s habitat conservation, research, education and fundraising activities employ 450 staff across Canada. The organization has 7,900 active volunteers and 176,000 supporters countrywide. Their support is critical: Up to 70 per cent of wetlands have disappeared in settled areas of Canada and more are being lost every day.
