Matthew Wilson wins DUC sanctioned Duck Calling Championship.
Amherst, NS, September 10, 2007 —Canada now has a champion duck caller and representative for the World’s Champion Duck Calling Contest in Stuttgart, Arkansas – and he’s from New Brunswick.
Matthew Wilson, 22, of Scott Siding , N.B., was the winner of the first ever Ducks Unlimited Canada sanctioned Duck Calling Championship on Saturday. The top prize included airfare, hotel and $350 spending money to compete at the World’s Championship, which takes place November 24.
“I started hunting when I was really young” Wilson says. “In Grade 1 or 2 my father started bringing me along and he always had an old goose call I used to play around with. About a year ago I got interested in competition calling so I started to practice. I went to my first competition in Halifax and didn’t even place. I enjoyed that first competition and it gave me the desire to get into it and I jumped all over the opportunity to do it again.”
This premiere event was held September 8 and 9, 2007 at the Amherst Curling Club as part of the annual Waterfowling Weekend.
“Ducks Unlimited Canada was pleased to host its first Duck and Goose Calling Championship in Amherst,” says Atlantic fundraising manager Barry Burke. “This weekend was about celebrating a heritage of waterfowling that is alive and well in this country. Many of the competitors in this event have been duck calling and hunting for most of their lives and it is a tradition that was passed on to them by their families. It was great to see such talented duck and goose callers in this area.”
The duck calling contest was on Saturday with the goose calling taking place on Sunday. First prize for the senior one-man goose caller is $1,000 in cash and was awarded to John Vaca from the USA
