North American Duck Symposium and Workshop engages waterfowl professionals
Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., January 9, 2009—Professionals who have made the study and management of waterfowl their life’s work welcome opportunities to keep pace with developments in their fields, within fast-changing ecological and social arenas. That’s why the overarching theme of the 5th North American Duck Symposium and Workshop will be “Duck Research and Management in a Changing World”.
Long Point Waterfowl and the University of Guelph are co-hosting the 2009 Symposium which will be held at the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, August 17 - 21, 2009.
Ducks Unlimited Canada and Ducks Unlimited, Inc. are sponsors of the 2009 Symposium. “As a science-based conservation organization, it’s important for us to be engaged with other experts from across North America in waterfowl ecology, conservation and management,” says Dr. David Howerter, manager of Ducks Unlimited Canada’s research arm, the Institute for Wetland and Waterfowl Research, and a member of the 2009 Symposium’s Science Program Committee.
Featuring plenary talks about current, key issues relating to ecology, conservation and management of ducks in North America and beyond, the event “provides a forum for scientists, managers, and students who are passionate about the conservation and management of ducks,” says Howerter, who adds that Symposium participants will identify and share information about the key factors that drive duck population changes, research needs, and desirable management actions.
