Ducks Unlimited Canada salutes conservation partnerships among eastern states and provinces
Saint John, N.B., September 15, 2009 – Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) recently recognized efforts by U.S. State Governors and Provincial Premiers in the Northeast for their leadership in conserving wetlands of importance to our shared environment at the 33rd Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers.
DUC President Jack H. Hole presented a handcrafted Dory Basket - a decorative basket in the shape of a dory boat, made by Brent Rourke of New Brunswick – to the Premiers and Governors in attendance at the reception: Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri, P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz, New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham, Quebec Premier Jean Charest, Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams.
Hole said that international partnerships in conservation through the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) have led to close connections on both sides of the border.
“The North American Waterfowl Management Plan, signed in 1986, is arguably the most successful international conservation initiative in the world,” Hole said. “This partnership of federal governments from the United States, Canada and Mexico; their state and provincial governments, NGOs, private companies and individuals work toward achieving better habitat for waterfowl across North America. This international conservation partnership has many other broad benefits to society that results in better air, better water and better life for people across the continent including New England and Eastern Canada.”
