P.E.I. native captures Canadian duck calling title
Amherst, N.S., September 26, 2009 – Competition at this year’s Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) Duck and Goose Calling Championship made it clear that the waterfowling heritage in this part of the world is going strong. Thirteen entrants competed throughout the day in duck and goose calling at the senior, intermediate and youth levels and on two-man teams.
The winner of the senior one-man competition is P.E.I. native and Nova Scotia Agricultural College student, Jeff Campbell. With this win, 20-year-old Campbell has qualified to compete in the World’s Championship Duck Calling Contest in Stuttgart, Arkansas. The top prize in that competition is $25,000. DUC will provide Campbell with airfare, hotel accommodation for three nights, $350 US spending money and the entry fee for the contest.
This is the only competition in Canada that is a sanctioned event, qualifying the winner to compete in Stuttgart. Campbell is truly Canada’s representative at the Worlds in November.
Campbell has a long history with DUC. In addition to conducting two youth duck calling workshops for DUC in the summer, in 2006 he attended DUC’s Great Greenwing Adventure, a camp for teenagers that includes outdoor activities and environmental learning. From that camp he was selected to attend a camp in the U.S. – that was his first trip to Stuttgart.
“That was amazing, but this time it’s going to be even better,” he said, clearly excited about his win. “I’ve been competition calling for four years and I’m looking forward to going to Stuttgart and competing against the best in the world.”
The DUC Championship was held on September 26 at the Amherst Curling Club.
