Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., March 3, 2010 — If you are a Canadian resident 14 to 17 years old; if you are into the outdoors, conservation, wetlands, wildlife, science, and the environment; and if you want to get away for a week this summer for an exciting outdoor adventure of a lifetime then this is your chance. Applications are now open for Ducks Unlimited Canada’s (DUC) new outdoor adventure camp and DUC wants you to be selected as the winner of the Name Our Camp Contest.

Ten applicants from across Canada will be selected by DUC to spend August 7 to 13, 2010 at world renowned Oak Hammock Marsh and Delta Marsh in Manitoba. Throughout the action-packed week, you’ll meet many new people and participate in exciting activities like duck and songbird banding, radio telemetry, geocaching, decoy carving, wilderness survival, camping, canoeing, and much more.

“Outdoor-savvy teens will love working with DUC’s scientists and interpreters to learn more about wetlands and the waterfowl and wildlife that depend on them,” said Rick Wishart, Director of Education for DUC. “Plus, the hands-on activities offer a great way to learn new skills while nurturing an appreciation for conservation.”

Youth ages 14 to 17 that care about wetlands, love spending time outdoors and want to take part in this thrilling outdoor adventure camp must apply online by June 1, 2010. In the application, they will be expected to outline what they’ve done for the environment, their outdoor interests, hobbies, volunteer work and leadership experience. DUC also wants to know what the applicants’ plans are after high school including university and career goals.

Camp fee is just $500 to cover all food, lodging, programs and expenses, but all 10 winners receive free airfare or transportation to join DUC from anywhere in Canada.

We also need your help to name our camp. Give us your best shot at a cool camp name and the winner will have all camp fees waived – a value of $500.

Get your family, friends or class to help you out. Here are a few thoughts to get your creative juices flowing:

  • It’s about wetlands, waterfowl and the outdoors.
  • It’s about getting involved in conservation actions to help the environment.
  • It’s about apps, skills, technology and hands-on learning from experts.
  • It’s EXTREME, but it’s all about teamwork and helping others succeed.

This new camp draws on DUC’s 15 years of experience with its highly successful Great Greenwing Adventure. This new camp is designed for young people who are already on their way to becoming conservation leaders in their own communities. It provides a chance to learn first-hand about DUC’s important conservation work in a fun and interactive way with other like-minded youth from across Canada.

You’re not a typical teenager so why settle for a typical summer camp. Make a difference and join the outdoor adventure camp of a lifetime today.
