Todd Macleod – Volunteering with DUC
Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., April 12, 2010 — Wildlife viewing is a favourite pastime for Todd Macleod of Montague, P.E.I, so when a friend invited him out to the annual Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) Montague dinner five years ago, he was definitely intrigued. The dinner turned out to be a lot of fun for Todd and great news for DUC. Todd was instantly impressed by DUC’s program. He especially liked that most of the dollars raised at events would be invested in local conservation projects. He decided at that event that he would like to volunteer with DUC.
The father of two is an avid waterfowler and outdoorsman and well respected in the community. Todd makes his living working in the local forest industry as a contractor for tree planting and silviculture work. He enjoys being outside any chance he can get whether it be waterfowling or taking an evening hike with his family. Todd and his fellow volunteers on the Montague committee are much alike in that regard and in their commitment to DUC.
“DUC is all about conserving wetlands, which is what we need to keep doing for our future and that of our children and their children,” says Todd. “I am grateful to be able to give back to nature in some way and this is the best way I can think to actually make a difference and I truly believe that I am.”
Todd appreciates the opportunity to be involved with DUC and by giving so much of his time to the organization, he has also benefitted in return. As treasurer, his financial management and organizational skills have advanced and become more efficient – particularly during actual events where frequent transactions are made at a fast pace. The treasurer has to stay on top of it all and Todd manages to do that. Todd also values the camaraderie among the committee and having the chance to work alongside others with similar interests and goals.
“The Montague committee is relatively new but Todd, along with the core group, has increased the dinner attendance and profits every year,” says Jamie Young, DUC’s fundraising manager in Prince Edward Island. “Todd exemplifies the entire chapter – they are a dedicated and hard working group of volunteers.”
“National Volunteer Week, April 18-24, is our opportunity to celebrate DUC’s team of 7,400 dedicated volunteers like Todd,” says Loraine Nyokong, DUC director of event and retail fundraising. “DUC volunteers are continually giving freely of themselves to organize fundraising events across Canada for the benefit of wetland conservation. They are the driving force behind our success.”
Funds raised by volunteers like Todd directly support DUC’s Wetlands for Tomorrow campaign – the largest conservation fundraising campaign in the history of North America. It spans three countries as DUC works alongside Ducks Unlimited, Inc. in the United States and Ducks Unlimited Mexico to conserve wetlands for waterfowl, other wildlife and people.
