Viterra and DUC renew forage partnership for 2010
Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., May 28, 2010—Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and Viterra are pleased to announce a renewed partnership for their forage incentive program in 2010.
Through this unique partnership, Viterra and DUC will offer producers an incentive to plant forages for pasture and hayland.
“Viterra is very pleased to play a pivotal role in providing product and program incentives to help Prairie producers realize the benefits of growing our innovative forage varieties on their land. Our partnership with DUC reflects our company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. Through collaborations like this, we will make lasting contributions to the environment,” said Doug Wonnacott, Senior Vice-President of Agri-products.
“DUC has a long history of working with conservation-minded producers. We are pleased to be working with an industry leader like Viterra on this partnership. Viterra’s support of our forage conversion programs have allowed us to continue to provide producers in key waterfowl areas with financial assistance and top quality forage seed,” said Paul Thoroughgood, DUC regional agrologist.
DUC is one of Canada’s leading advocates for compensating landowners for the ecological goods and services produced on their land. Properly stewarded forages and associated wetlands help provide clean water, carbon sequestration and abundant wildlife, which benefit all Canadians. This flexible forage incentive program is just one more way for DUC to assist producers who wish to maintain and enhance healthy forage lands and protect the soil and water resources under their care.
Research conducted by DUC has shown that perennial forages provide safe and attractive nesting habitat for upland nesting waterfowl and other birds. Agricultural production systems that include perennial forages also helps protect the wetlands found on the landscape.
