Province and Ducks Unlimited Canada Sign Habitat Agreement

Regina SK, Nov. 4 – Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) Minister Lorne Scott and Ducks Unlimited Canada Executive Vice-President Don Young signed a partnership agreement today that will help to conserve and enhance important wildlife habitat throughout the province.

Under the agreement, the department and Ducks Unlimited Canada will provide matching dollars for habitat conservation and enhancement establishing a total potential conservation commitment by both parties of $2.5 million over the-five-year term. The department will use funds from the Fish and Wildlife Development Fund (FWDF), subject to availability, to a maximum of $250,000 per year over five years. Ducks Unlimited's funding will be generated through the North American Waterfowl Management Plan.

The wildlife component of the FWDF receives 30 per cent of all hunting and trapping license revenues. Lands purchased through the fund provide food and shelter for many species. Natural habitat is one of the key elements to the survival of approximately 400 species of Saskatchewan birds and animals.

"Working together in effective partnerships will ensure a healthy environment and better management of our resources,'' Scott said. "Our partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada supports the province's commitment to protecting wildlife habitat.''

"We have identified key areas in Saskatchewan that provide excellent habitat for waterfowl and offer benefits to other wildlife as well,'' Young said. "This agreement allows us to ensure these critical areas remain a part of Saskatchewan's landscape.''

Ducks Unlimited Canada has spent $173 million in Saskatchewan on over 1,900 projects.

"This agreement recognizes the benefit of public and private sector cooperation in achieving long-term habitat conservation initiatives,'' Young said.
