Ducks Unlimited Canada presents ESRI Canada
with Prestigious Award
Winnipeg MB, Oct. 25 – Ducks Unlimited Canada presented ESRI Canada with the prestigious Platinum Teal Award at ESRI Canada's annual ESRI Regional User Conference in Winnipeg, earlier today.
Brian Kazmerik, Manager, Geographic Information Systems, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DU), presented Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, the leading geographic information systems (GIS) provider in Canada, with the Platinum Teal Award in recognition of ESRI Canada's ongoing support of Ducks Unlimited. More than 100 GIS professionals were on hand for the presentation, which was one of the highlights of the conference.
"ESRI Canada's GIS contributions directly support DU's conservation efforts by allowing a large number of our staff across the country to use these tools in the planning, targeting, delivery, and monitoring of habitat conservation," said Brian Kazmerik. "GIS has become the strategic planning tool for DU and this would not be possible without ESRI Canada's support. GIS is the "common language" for sharing information among conservation partners and fortunately ESRI's tools are the most popular among our partners. We have strengthened our relationship with a number of conservation partners over the last five years through joint projects involving geographic data and GIS technology."
DU is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of wetlands and associated habitats for the benefit of waterfowl, wildlife and people. Generous support from individuals, foundations, governments and corporations like ESRI Canada is instrumental to DU's conservation success.
"GIS helps us target our habitat programs to areas that make the biggest difference to improving waterfowl populations," Kazmerik said. "We have developed a decision support system that predicts areas of high waterfowl breeding potential. We then overlay nesting habitat information and other important layers such as protected lands and land use trends. This approach to focusing our conservation efforts started in the Prairies and is now being adapted to other important waterfowl producing areas across Canada."
Teal Awards recognize individuals, corporations and organizations that make a significant lifetime contribution of goods, services and/or merchandise towards Ducks Unlimited's conservation mission.
