DUC Restores the Chemainus Estuary

Ducks Unlimited Canada has begun restoration work on the Chemainus Estuary. An average of 1,000 waterfowl use the estuary each day.

A sure sign of autumn is the sound of birds overhead winging their way south. Along their migration routes ducks and geese have staging areas where they rest and fuel up in preparation for the flight. Across Canada, many of these staging areas have been enhanced by Ducks Unlimited Canada and its conservation partners to improve habitat for waterfowl and increase viewing opportunities for people.

Nova Scotia
For some migrating waterfowl such as Canada geese, black ducks, common eider and greater scaup, Nova Scotia is their destination point.

Prince Edward Island

DUC has completed more than 160 conservation projects across Prince Edward Island that contribute to the spectacle of fall migration.

New Brunswick

While most waterfowl will leave New Brunswick in late fall, large numbers of sea ducks, common eider in particular, over winter in the Bay of Fundy.

Québec

Habitat conditions range from good to very good this year for nesting waterfowl.

Ontario

People will be seeing a lot of local breeding birds such as mallards, blue-winged teals, wood ducks and resident Canada geese moving through.

Manitoba

The birds have begun to descend at Manitoba’s premier migration destination, Oak Hammock Marsh.

Saskatchewan

Habitat conditions ranged from good to fair this year for nesting waterfowl.

Alberta

Migration hotspot viewing areas are located within a one to two hour drive from Alberta’s urban and rural centres.

British Columbia

Habitat conditions varied from excellent to poor this year for nesting waterfowl.

In celebration of 65 years of wetland conservation in Canada, DUC is recognizing its habitat heroes—landowners who voluntarily participate in DUC habitat conservation programs to improve wildlife friendly habitat and the sustainability of land use. In each province across Canada, DUC is recognizing individuals who are part of a national network that is 16,000 landowners strong.

Newfoundland

A natural resource officer builds homes for some of Newfoundland’s most interesting residents—eider ducks.

Nova Scotia

Aylesford farmers work with DUC to enhance their operation, the habitat on their land and their love of wildlife.

Prince Edward Island

Through the success of the restored wetland on his property, a farmer in St. Peters Bay spreads the conservation ethic.

New Brunswick

A local landowner labours unceasingly to protect some of the most productive—and most threatened—ecosystems on Earth.

Quebec

A landowner in Aylmer partners with DUC to restore a wetland on his property and reaps the wildlife benefits it provides.
