Lieutenant-Governor Presents Wetland Conservation Award
Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award recognizes contributions to wetland conservation in Nova Scotia
Halifax , Nova Scotia , September 10, 2004 – Today at Government House, The Honourable Myra A. Freeman, ONS, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia, presented the province’s first Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award to Arthur Irving for his role in establishing the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre at Acadia University.
Awarded annually and sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of wetland conservation in Nova Scotia, and/or individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation.
“The high quality of nominees for this year’s award is encouraging for the future of wetland conservation and the future of this award in Nova Scotia,” Her Honour stated when asked about the level of interest for the award.
Arthur Irving has been committed to wetland conservation in Nova Scotia for more than 20 years. He is being honoured with this award for his personal vision and leadership with the establishment of the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre at Acadia University. With the support of his brothers James, John and their families, Mr. Irving developed this impressive academic facility, which provides young people an opportunity to understand the value of wetlands and coastal ecosystems for waterfowl, wildlife and people. The centre is equipped with state-of-the-art research laboratories to support conservation and aquatic ecology studies. The centre is named in honour of Irving’s father, K.C. Irving.
“I am honoured to be presented with the Nova Scotia Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award,” said Mr. Irving. “I am pleased to see the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre being recognized for its progressive work in wetland conservation and its commitment to academic excellence.”
Dr. Mark Gloutney, manager of Atlantic operations for Ducks Unlimited Canada added, “The establishment of the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Award is a significant step in raising awareness for wetland conservation in Nova Scotia and DUC is proud to be the award sponsor.”
DUC conserves, restores and manages wetlands and their associated habitats for the benefit of North America’s waterfowl. These habitats—nature’s water filters—also benefit other wildlife and people.
