Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to Recognize Manitoba’s Wetland Advocates
NOMINATION DEADLINE EXTENDED
Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., October 7, 2005 —A newly created award will recognize individuals and groups who aim to preserve and protect Manitoba wetlands.
The Honourable John Harvard, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, and Peter Carton, president of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) announced the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award today.
Sponsored by DUC, the award will recognize those who have taken leadership roles in promoting public awareness of conserving wetlands and associated habitats in Manitoba for the benefit of waterfowl, wildlife and people.
"Many Manitobans have realized the value that wetlands contribute to our quality of life," said Lieutenant-Governor Harvard. "I am pleased to create this award recognizing those who champion the conservation of the province's wetland habitats."
Awarded annually, the Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award will be presented to an individual, company or organization demonstrating leadership in a project or activity that has contributed significantly to the public awareness of conserving wetlands. The award will also recognize individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation. As well, individuals and organizations that have demonstrated leadership in an education project or activity that has increased public awareness and understanding of the values of wetland ecosystems are eligible for the award.
If you know a person or organization that has contributed to protecting and preserving Manitoba’s wetlands, consider nominating them for the Manitoba Lieutenant-Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award. The name of the individual, company, or organization must be forwarded by mail to Ducks Unlimited Canada, Unit 2, 545 Conservation Drive, Brandon, MB R7A 7L8 or e-mailed to du_brandon@ducks.ca.
The nomination deadline for the award has been extended to October 31, 2005.
“Ducks Unlimited Canada is truly honoured to be partnering with the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba," said Mr. Carton. "We are pleased that this award will recognize those who are actively securing a healthy environment for future generations of people and wildlife."
Wetlands provide essential habitat to approximately 600 wildlife species in Canada, including many of Canada's endangered species. These habitats also act as natural water filters, and serve to remove impurities from the water we drink and use every day.
