Dawson Creek, B.C, June 1, 2010 – This Environment Week, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is proud to announce the completion of the Piper Pond wetland restoration project near Dawson Creek. This gift to the local environment is made possible with support from Encana and the Piper family.

“Thanks to the Pipers and Encana, we’ve got birds and other small wildlife stopping by to try out the new habitat forming because of this wetland restoration,” says Darryl Kroeker, head of conservation programs with DUC in B.C.. The Piper Pond sits amid some of the most productive waterfowl and wildlife habitat in B.C.. This 30-acre wetland will provide habitat for trumpeter swans, lesser scaup and a variety of other species of wildlife.

Encana is a long-time supporter of DUC having begun their sponsorship in 1981. “Our Community Investment Program contains a special focus on environmental stewardship, so we feel our work with Ducks to develop best environmental practices and help restore wetlands is very rewarding,” says Mike Forgo, Vice-President Business Services and Stakeholder Relations, Encana.

“Encana’s financial support of this project was essential. The vision of the Piper family and Encana’s leadership to fund opportunities that support wetland conservation illustrates environmental responsibility and good citizenship. Partnerships with landowners and industry players like Encana are key in helping Ducks protect important waterfowl habitats in the Peace,” adds Kroeker.

Encana also supports Project Webfoot, DUC’s wetland education program aimed at grade five students. The company contributed $1 million to DUC’s Wetlands for Tomorrow campaign which supports this and several other conservation and research projects in Alberta and northern B.C.
