Rewarding excellence in wetland conservation
Nominations now accepted for the 2010 Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award
Charlottetown, PE, June 14, 2010 — With summer around the corner, it’s a perfect time to recognize Prince Edward Island’s wetland conservationists. Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is looking for these people so they can be rewarded for their hard work.
In parts of this province, there are people pushing the limits to achieve excellence in wetland conservation. It might be the teacher who is taking extra time to educate their students about the importance of wetlands, or the farmer who helped restore a wetland, or the group that raised money to conserve a wetland in their community.
“It’s hard work conserving wetlands, but we know they’re worth the effort,” says Jack H. Hole, President of Ducks Unlimited Canada. “We want to find individuals and organizations who are working for wetland conservation in their communities.”
“Wetlands provide waterfowl and wildlife habitat and give us places to enjoy and learn about nature. Our science-based research has shown that wetlands provide us with other valuable benefits such as flood protection, carbon sequestration and water filtration. They are a vital resource that we can’t afford to lose.”
If you know a person or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to protect and preserve Prince Edward Island’s wetlands, nominate them for the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award. The nomination deadline is July 30, 2010.
This award recognizes those who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of conserving wetlands for the benefit of waterfowl, wildlife, and people. The award is sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada and is presented by the Honourable Barbara A. Hagerman, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.
Nomination forms are available online. Forms can be submitted via mail to Ducks Unlimited Canada Suite 206, Farm Centre, 420 University Avenue, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island C1A 7Z5, via fax at (902) 569-4674 or by e-mail at du_charlottetown@ducks.ca
