Charlottetown, PE, September 8, 2010 — Today at Government House, The Honourable Barbara A. Hagerman, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, presented the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to Charles H. Perret and Gloria McKinnon Perret for their contribution to wetland conservation.

Last August, the Perrets donated 173 acres of land to the Island Nature Trust, with the request that this land be kept undeveloped and free of all forms of pollution, including light pollution.

Wade Lewis, Manager of Restoration Service for Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), read the citation during today’s ceremony and talked about how the Perrets have long been concerned with the preservation of wetlands and open space. For 10 years, Charles was a member of the Inland Wetland Commission in his hometown of Torrington, Connecticut. While there, he experienced first-hand the pressures that are placed on communities when developers overbuild.  Summer residents of Cable Head since 1961, the Perrets have grown attached to the area and are concerned about the infilling of wetlands on the island.

“The Perrets are an excellent example of the difference that individuals can make to conserving habitat on Prince Edward Island,” claimed Lewis.

Upon accepting the award Charles Perret said that he and his wife were very proud to receive the unexpected honour.
Perret indicated great pleasure at being able to contribute to PEI’s conservation efforts. “Besides preserving a valuable watershed, this donation will also result in the protection of a considerable amount of environmentally sensitive Cable Head shore,” he stated.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Award, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada, recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to public awareness of wetland conservation, or individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation. The winner is chosen from a field of nominees by an independent selection committee.
