DU Canada concerned with lack of commitment to wetlands in throne speech

Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., October 24, 2011 – Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is concerned the provincial government did not specifically reference wetlands, or the protection of wetlands, as a part of the solution to Manitoba’s flooding and water quality problems in the recent Throne Speech.

“We are disappointed, as will be our 19,000-plus volunteers and supporters,” says Bob Grant, manager of provincial operations for DUC. “Given all the environmental issues that wetlands address, it is somewhat disturbing that a commitment to protecting wetlands was not a key component of the Throne Speech.”

The topic of wetlands was brought up numerous times by political candidates and the media prior to the election. Manitobans started speaking up about wetland loss, but clearly, we need to be louder.

DUC’s research confirms there are definite economic consequences of wetland loss. Flooding costs us in lost agricultural productivity and commerce, infrastructure damage and compensation payments. Flood damages will only increase if this government doesn’t ramp up its wetland protection efforts soon. A commitment to wetlands is one of the best investments this government can make.

DUC hopes the surface water management plan mentioned in the Throne Speech recognizes the valuable role wetlands play in reducing flooding and nutrient transfer, and that their protection and restoration are included as critical elements. Manitobans are already concerned with water quality problems and increases in flooding, and we don’t need to make things worse by draining even more wetlands.

“Natural resources must be used wisely and efficiently. Currently we do neither with our wetlands. We squander their functions and pay the price in flood damage costs, drought compensation, degraded water quality, and so forth, “ says Grant. “We can’t sustain economic growth or meet our fiscal and environmental targets if we have to keep cleaning up our environment. And if this government continues to ignore wetland loss, they will fail to meet their commitments to Manitobans. Manitoba needs a comprehensive provincial policy to protect and restore these valuable wetlands.”

DUC has 70 years of expertise and experience to assist government and stakeholders in the development of a wetland policy that benefits all Manitobans. On behalf of our supporters and concerned Manitobans, DUC continues to encourage government to promote wetland conservation. DUC looks forward to the opportunity to work with the government in developing an effective wetland policy for Manitoba.
