The Opportunity

Reporting to DUC-PEI Conservation Program Specialist, the student will assist with a variety of wetland conservation related activities, including:

  • Inspecting and maintaining DUC wetland projects with fish ladders, water control structures, and small marsh projects
  • site assessments for potential wetland restoration projects
  • beaver debris management on existing DUC wetland projects
  • waterfowl banding
  • communicating with landowners regarding maintenance of projects
  • supervising contractors and heavy equipment operators during project maintenance
  • coordinating volunteers involved in the Land Monitoring program.  This includes contacting volunteers, making maps, developing an online form for data collection, and writing final reports.
  • various DUC community events including “Duck Day” in Charlottetown, PE

Details

  • Expected term of employment is 12-14 weeks, beginning May 14, 2018 (position and length of employment is pending receipt of funding)
  • Salary is $15.33/hr based on a 35-hour week

Requirements

  • Technical experience in construction or a related field
  • Keen interest in wildlife and wetlands
  • ATV Safety course certificate
  • Chainsaw experience and Chainsaw Safety course certificate
  • Ability to solve problems and work efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Desire to work outdoors in various conditions
  • Experience using aerial photos and maps for navigation is essential (e.g. Google Earth, Google Maps, or GIS software)
  • Willingness to learn GIS concepts and follow outlined procedures
  • Courses in soil composition or topographical surveying would be considered an asset
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • Ability to work with members of a team
  • Must be willing to work within a flexible work schedule
  • Must have an insured vehicle and valid drivers license (a 4×4 truck would be considered an asset).
  • Must be returning to school in Fall 2018.
