History of West Nile Virus 

  • 1937: first identified in Uganda; has since been found in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and west and central Asia.
  • 1999: identified in North America around New York City.
  • 2000: virus spreads to adjoining states.
  • 2001: virus spreads west to the Mississippi River, positive birds in Ontario.
  • 2002: first records of human disease in southern Ontario and Quebec; positive birds from Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan.
  • 2003: the virus spread to Alberta and New Brunswick.
  • 2004: relatively little activity in Canada.
  • 2005: the virus is reported in all continental U.S. states and in five Canadian provinces.
  • 2006: human cases of the virus are reported in 43 states and five provinces. B.C. recorded its first ever case of the virus in a horse, which health officials believe may have been contracted while it was traveling in Colorado.
  • 2007: highest number of human cases recorded in Canada at 2,381
  • 2008: a low number of cases reported in Canada
  • 2009: very little activity in Canada; first human infections in B.C.
