1998
An evaluation of use, by waterfowl and other wetland-dependant avian species, took place during the summer of 1998. Two surveys were completed during 1998, one brood survey and one staging survey. The intent of the survey was to provide an indication of the importance of the various wetland types to breeding, and post-breeding waterbirds of the Taiga Plain Ecozone in the Fort Nelson area.
1999
The waterbird surveys that took place in 1999 included an expansion of the 1998 effort to quantify use during breeding, brood rearing and pre-migration staging periods. Five surveys were completed during 1999, including two breeding, two brood, and one staging survey.
2001
Fort Nelson land-cover fieldwork took place in the summer of 2001. A total of 604 field sites were sampled throughout the project area in northeastern British Columbia.
Colleagues at the University of Alberta conducted water chemistry sampling and analysis on 90 wetlands on the Fort Nelson project area during this same time period.
2002
Two reconnaissance surveys took place during the fall to survey staging areas for waterbirds. On one survey over 6000 staging birds were recorded on Kotcho Lake, more than 1900 on Clarke Lake, 1400 on July Lake, and 600 on Maxhamish Lake.
Final products from the land-cover classification were delivered.
Water chemistry analysis and report was completed.
2003
The first year of a three-year comprehensive waterbird inventory commenced in the spring of 2003 lasting through to October.
