Comparative Foraging Ecology of Dusky Canada and Cackling Geese Wintering in the Willamette Valley, Oregon

Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon

The abundance and diversity of Canada and cackling geese wintering in the Willamette Valley of Oregon has increased since 1970, leading to increasing problems with crop depredation. The range in body sizes among subspecies provides a unique opportunity to conduct a comparative study of wintering goose foraging ecology, possibly leading to taxa-specific strategies to address crop depredation concerns.

Anne’s objectives are to: 1) quantify the energetic needs of dusky and cackling geese; 2) compare nutritional quality and food availability between public and private lands; 3) construct time-activity budgets for dusky and cackling geese; and 4) characterize habitat use of dusky and cackling geese on private versus public land and quantify the foraging options available to geese.
