David Howerter

National Manager, IWWR

Research Scientist David Howerter has been working at IWWR since 1991. As IWWR’s landscape ecologist, Dave has primarily been involved in prairie-wide studies of the demographic responses of upland-nesting ducks to variation in the spatial arrangements of habitats. The Prairie Habitat Joint Venture Assessment was a large multi-faceted study that collected novel data on >3,600 radio-marked female mallards, > 19,000 duck nests, and > 900 marked mallard broods. Currently, Dave is the lead on the Spatial and Temporal Variation in Nest Success Study. Additionally, Dave has worked on projects modeling the spatial distribution and productivity of ducks throughout the prairies and western boreal forest regions of Canada and currently is engaged in building predictive models that relate geospatial landscape attributes to the probability of natural habitats being converted to other landuses. Dave serves on the Waterfowl Working Group of the Prairie Habitat Joint Venture.

Howerter obtained his Ph.D. through the Ecology Department of Montana State University, his Master's degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences from Virginia Tech and his Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University.
