Values and Benefits of Wetland Habitats

Wetlands offer many benefits to waterfowl, wildlife and people. Unfortunately, up to 70 per cent of our wetlands have been lost in settled areas of Canada, and more are lost every day.

DUC believes that wetlands are more beneficial to Canadians, both environmentally and economically, if they are left intact rather than drained or destroyed.

Wetlands...

  • Are key to the lifecycles of waterfowl and other wildlife
  • Filter our water and help provide clean, secure water sources
  • Provide environmental and societal value by moderating the effects of droughts, floods, climate change, and erosion
  • Offer tremendous recreation and learning opportunities for people of all ages
  • Are essential habitat for as many as 600 species of wildlife in Canada.
  • Have the potential to remove and store greenhouse gases from the Earth’s atmosphere

These are just some of the benefits of wetland habitats. We need to act now to stop wetland loss. Learn more about how you can help conserve Canada’s wetlands for tomorrow…today!
