The Canadian Wetland Inventory
The Project
In 2002, the Canadian Wetland Inventory (CWI) partnership was established between Environment Canada, Canadian Space Agency, Ducks Unlimited Canada and the North American Wetlands Conservation Council (Canada). Since that time, CWI partners, including several provinces and academic institutions, have developed standards for detecting, classifying and mapping wetlands by the different wetland types across Canada.
The objectives of the CWI are to provide a national wetland map that can be used for the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands for environmental and societal benefits and to provide easy access to standardized digital wetland mapping products.
A status map has been developed to show areas of the country where a CWI is either in progress or complete.
For more information on the CWI, please email cwi@ducks.ca
The four founding partners of the CWI are:
- Canadian Space Agency
- Ducks Unlimited Canada
- Environment Canada - Canadian Wildlife Service HQ
- North American Wetlands Conservation Council (Canada)
DUC and our partners have developed an interactive wetland inventory mapping tool.
See the progress in your area and learn about all the different types of wetlands across Canada.
