Geese in Space research is already providing useful information
to waterfowl biologists. Geese tagged with radio transmitters
in 1999 have revealed some interesting migration patterns.
- Birds tagged in Greenland did not stop in the Maritimes
at all. They flew through to wintering areas in Long Island,
New York. Clearly the habitats in Long Island are important
to the geese in Greenland.
- Geese that did touch down in the Maritimes stayed longer
than expected. The geese have access to quality food resources
in agricultural fields, particularly in PEI. Mild fall conditions
in 1999 may have also contributed to their lengthy stay.
The consequence of their stay in the Maritimes is greater
exposure to potential hunting pressure for a longer period
than researchers expected.
- Eight of the 24 birds fitted with radio transmitters died
before reaching wintering grounds. This is an extremely
low survival rate. Continued research on the birds' survival
rates will help wildlife managers develop harvest regulations
that reflect the status and ecology of the North Atlantic
population of Canada geese.
