DUC’s policy for working with children

DUC engages youth in environmental education through our interpretive centres as well as the Greenwing and Project Webfoot programs. Led by staff, volunteers, contractors and partners, we reach up to 100,000 youth annually. To meet community standards and ensure both adults and youth are protected, DUC has recently updated our policy governing youth events. This is needed to provide the necessary liability insurance to make these programs possible. The policy was endorsed by the DUC Board of Directors and is now fully in effect.

The policy follows common sense principles and a brief document lays out the steps needed to hold safe events. In advance of participating in any DUC endorsed event, all adults must go through a screening process and be approved for these activities. This includes filling in a simple application form, providing references and signing a new code of conduct. For events that include overnight camps or activities involving firearms, additional screening is required.

We recognize that initially this will add preplanning and a few extra steps prior to holding your Greenwing or other youth event, and we appreciate your understanding and support in making these necessary improvements. For a copy of the policy or assistance, please contact your provincial DUC education coordinator, e-mail us at greenwings@ducks.ca or call 1-800-665-DUCK(3825) and ask for Education.
