Ducks Unlimited Canada has conserved wetlands for more than 70 years. These wetlands filter your water. Learn more about how DUC works to conserve wetland habitats across the country.
DUC needs your help to ensure future generations of waterfowl, wildlife and people continue to benefit from all wetlands have to offer.
Add your voice to the cause and spread the word about the importance of wetlands and the urgent need to save them.
Why Should You Help DUC Conserve Wetlands and Wildlife?
In a recent survey about the environment, 43 per cent of Canadians surveyed felt the protection of Canada’s water, including wetlands, lakes and rivers, to be most important.
Despite this growing concern and awareness, Canada’s wetlands continue to be destroyed and degraded across the country. Agriculture, industry and urban development are just some of the ongoing threats that Canada’s wetlands face.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is committed to wetland conservation. Your help is needed to stem the tide of wetland loss. But why should you help?
The answer is simple. Wetlands provide a rich variety of benefits to both people and wildlife. These benefits touch the lives of all Canadians.
Wildlife Habitat
Wetlands are home to a tremendous amount of life. Approximately 600 species of wildlife in Canada are supported by wetlands and their associated uplands. This includes many species that are considered to be “species at risk” by the Canadian Wildlife Service. In addition, wetlands also support many species of plants, including grasses, rushes, trees and much more.
Water Quality
Wetlands are nature’s water filters. Water passing through wetlands is cleansed of harmful pollutants long before it reaches the pipes that carry it to your home. Excess nutrients (like phosphorus and nitrogen), bacteria and sediments are just some of the things that wetlands clean from the water.
In addition to cleaning water, wetlands also help to keep water supplies balanced. Wetlands help to prevent flooding by absorbing excess water from precipitation and runoff. By the same token, wetlands slowly release extra water into the surrounding landscape, helping to reduce the impact of drought.
DUC – A Long Term Investment in Wetland and Wildlife Conservation
Through cutting-edge science and research, DUC’s conservation programs continually adapt to ensure that wetlands are being conserved effectively and efficiently.
By supporting DUC, you’ll be making a long-term investment in Canada’s wetlands. The returns will be invaluable. Clean water, habitat for wildlife and a healthy landscape for Canada are well worth the investment.
