Pierrefonds artist helps raise much-needed money for wetland conservation

Outranked by Claudio D’Angelo

Outranked selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s prestigious collection

Oak Hammock Marsh, Man., February 1, 2011 – Claudio D’Angelo of Pierrefonds, Que. joins some of Canada’s foremost nature artists in donating his artwork to help Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) raise much-needed funds for wetland conservation.

D’Angelo’s painting, Outranked, was selected as part of Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2011 National Art Portfolio (NAP). Each year, hundreds of artists submit their artwork in hope of being chosen for the NAP. Those who are selected have their artwork made into high-quality prints and are given national exposure through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through the NAP supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.

“The NAP is an extremely valuable fundraising tool for DUC,” says Loraine Nyokong, DUC’s national director of fundraising and membership. “We are very fortunate to have the support of some of Canada’s greatest nature artists, including Claudio D’Angelo. His print is a wonderful example of the beauty that exists in nature – and the growing need to conserve these natural areas. I’m confident it will be very successful in helping DUC raise the money we need to continue our wetland conservation work.”

D’Angelo sees nature as an inexhaustible source of inspiration, returning to it regularly to gather reference material for his work. In his print Outranked, he depicts a small bull moose retreating across a shallow pond to avoid clashing with a larger, more robust resident. Through his work, D’Angelo hopes to raise public awareness and emphasize the need to conserve natural resources such as wetlands.

For more than 25 years, artists have donated their artwork to help DUC conserve vanishing wetland habitats. DUC’s event fundraising season is now underway and people are encouraged to attend events to see artwork by D’Angelo and other great Canadian artists.
