DUC – Wetland and Wildlife conservation in Alberta

Albertans who care have been protecting waterfowl and conserving wetlands though the work of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) since the organization began in 1938. Alberta is North America’s key “duck factory” with eight million waterfowl and 20 million shorebirds using its wetlands and surrounding habitat to mate, nest, hatch and raise their young.

DUC has launched the John E. Poole Conservation Fund in honour of the late John Poole. The fund is aiming to raise a total of $5 million to support wetland conservation initiatives in Alberta, including a wetland interpretive site at Big Lake.

Province expands Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park

Boreal forest wetlandThe Alberta government is expanding one of its legacy parks to further preserve an internationally significant bird sanctuary. With the addition of 378 new hectares of land, Lois Hole Centennial Park, which honours Alberta's late Lieutenant Governor, will grow to nearly 1800 hectares in size. DUC will be building an interpretive wetland on the new park lands to educate visitors about the sensitive ecology in the area.

DUC urges participation in Alberta Land-use Framework public consultations

Boreal forest wetlandDevelopment impacts on wetlands and water quality are key issues on the minds of Albertans these days. That’s why the public consultation sessions for the Alberta Land-Use Framework, Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP), couldn’t have come at a better time. DUC encourages Albertans to voice their support for wetland conservation in the Lower Athabasca, a region experiencing rapid developmental growth.

Shell commits to conservation legacy in Alberta

PintailsDucks Unlimited Canada (DUC) is receiving some big funds for its Big Lake project. DUC is proud to be one of four recipients of the Shell Environmental Fund Major Grant. The $100,000 donation will support the John E. Poole Conservation Fund and Wetland Interpretive Site located adjacent to Big Lake, just north of Edmonton, Alberta.
