Calgary Wetland Conservation Plan

Strategy continues with its work on the Alberta Wetland Policy

Calgary's wetland loss has been greater than 90% since pre-settlement times. DUC started working with Calgary Parks in 1999 to map and classify existing wetlands and watersheds on the city's fringe. More than 8,000 wetlands were identified.

DUC continued to work with the City of Calgary on the conservation of its wetlands, and retains a seat on the Parks Foundation Calgary Wetland Committee. In 2004, DUC joined Calgary city leaders in celebrating the unanimous passing of a wetland conservation plan by City Council. This plan makes Calgary the first city in Canada to define priorities and best practices for wetland conservation. It includes a no net wetland loss policy that promotes conservation and provides for mitigation in future urban development.

The Wetland Conservation Plan is an important tool to protect wetlands in Canada’s fastest growing city, as well as serving as a model for other cities and provinces.
