Water For Life

Strategy continues with its work on the Alberta Wetland Policy

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) was an active participant in the development of the Government of Alberta’s Water for Life Strategy, both at the committee level and in responding to the provincial consultation. This initiative resulted in a province-wide water management approach, released in 2003, that outlines strategies and actions to address three major goals:

  1. Safe, secure drinking water supply
  2. Health aquatic ecosystems
  3. Reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy

The result of the strategy was the creation of a Collaborative Partnership Framework, which includes ongoing stakeholder and partnership involvement through local watershed stewardship groups, regional watershed planning and advisory councils and the Alberta Water Council. It is this unique grassroots approach that sets Alberta apart from similar water strategies and may become a model adopted across Canada. DUC has been very supportive of this strategy because of its potential to positively impact wetlands and watersheds throughout the province.

DUC sits on the Alberta Water Council and various subcommittees representing the wetland sector, in addition DUC has representation on watershed advisory councils and many local watershed stewardship groups.

The Alberta Water Council was formed to guide the implementation of the strategy and advise the provincial government on its implementation. One of the first key initiatives of this council is the development of an Alberta Wetland Policy.  The Provincial Wetland Inventory will be an important tool in this process.
