Aerial farmlands and wetlands

Did you know?

A watershed is an area of land that drains to a common point.  Watersheds store water in ponds, wetlands, lakes and underground aquifers. A healthy watershed affects human, agricultural, industrial and wildlife users.
DUC has been a major WEBS partner since the initiative began in 2005. (2005/050706.html)

Watershed Evaluation of Beneficial Management Practices Research

The Watershed Evaluation of Beneficial Management Practices (WEBS) is a four year national project led by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. DUC is a key partner, contributing $1.25 million to this $5.65 million dollar project.

The goal of this project is to measure the impacts of certain land use practices on water quality and their impact on local watersheds, e.g. specific farming activities designed to minimize environmental impacts such as erosion, run-off and sedimentation. The study will look at practices such as land conversion, riparian buffer strips, managed livestock access to water and nutrient management

WEBS is unique in that this is the first time beneficial management practices (BMPs) will be tested in a small watershed setting. Seven Canadian sites have been chosen; these sites were selected because of the land use represented in their region and their long term records of historic information and trends that can be used as a baseline. The Alberta site is in the Lower Little Bow watershed (2,565-ha) north of Lethbridge. It is anticipated that these sites will continue as long-term benchmarks for watershed health and future watershed studies.
