DUC – Wetland and Wildlife conservation in Alberta
Albertans who care have been protecting waterfowl and conserving wetlands though the work of Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) since the organization began in 1938. Alberta is North America’s key “duck factory” with eight million waterfowl and 20 million shorebirds using its wetlands and surrounding habitat to mate, nest, hatch and raise their young.
John E. Poole Conservation Fund
DUC has launched the John E. Poole Conservation Fund in honour of the late John Poole. The fund is aiming to raise a total of $5 million to support wetland conservation initiatives in Alberta, including a wetland interpretive site at Big Lake.

Special dedication honours Calgary philanthropist
Conservation history was made at a dedication to recognize the late Daryl ‘Doc’ Seaman and his commitment and contribution to preserving a significant part of the natural prairie landscape in southern Alberta. The dedication also marks one of Alberta’s largest donated conservation easements and $500 million in land donations for Environment Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program.
New conservation fund honours Alberta philanthropist
The John E. Poole Conservation Fund is for the formation of a legacy fund to support wetland conservation activities in Alberta, including the development of the John E. Poole Wetland Interpretive Site. The interpretive wetland is adjacent to Lois Hole Provincial Park in St. Albert, Alberta. The park protects an internationally renowned area that provides critical habitat for thousands of nesting and migrating waterfowl and shorebirds.
