Lieutenant Governor presents inaugural wetland conservation award
Award recognizes group’s outstanding contributions to wetland conservation in Alberta
Edmonton, Alta., June 19, 2007—In a ceremony held at the Telus World of Science today, The Honourable Norman L. Kwong, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, presented the province’s first Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to the Kimiwan Lake Naturalists for their outstanding grassroots efforts to not only conserve, but raise national and international awareness for the importance of the Kimiwan Lake wetlands.
Awarded annually and sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of wetland conservation in Alberta and/or individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation.
“There were many very deserving nominees for this award, which bodes well for wetlands in Alberta,” said The Honourable Norman L. Kwong. “These habitats are extremely valuable for both wildlife and people, and it is important to recognize the individuals and groups like the Kimiwan Lake Naturalists who are working so hard to conserve them.”
“It’s a tremendous honour to receive the award,” said Mark Heckbert of the Naturalists. “Kimiwan Lake isn't just beautiful; it is important to the health and quality of life of the waterfowl and other wildlife that live there, the surrounding communities, and the province as well. This award recognizes many volunteers who have worked so hard over the years to help conserve it and share its values with others.”
DUC recognizes the importance in promoting the contributions made to wetland conservation by those in our community. “The establishment of the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award in Alberta follows in the footsteps of other provinces. It is significant in raising awareness for wetland conservation in this province,” said DUC President, Neil Downey. “Our wetland habitats are being lost at an alarming rate, so it’s important that we recognize those that are helping to make a difference in wetland conservation at local and provincial levels.”
DUC would like to thank the Telus World of Science for co-sponsoring this award ceremony.
