Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to Recognize Alberta Wetland Advocates

A newly created award will recognize individuals and groups who aim to preserve and protect Alberta wetlands.

Edmonton, AB., March 27, 2007The Lieutenant Governor's Greenwing Conservation Award was announced today by Lieutenant Governor Norman Kwong and Peter Carton, President of Ducks Unlimited Canada.

Sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Award will recognize those who have taken leadership roles in promoting public awareness of conserving wetlands and associated habitats in Alberta for the benefit of waterfowl, wildlife, and people.

"Many Albertans have realized the value that wetlands contribute to our quality of life," said Lieutenant Governor Kwong. "I am pleased to create this award recognizing those who champion the conservation of the province's wetland habitats."

Awarded annually, the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award will be presented to an individual, company or organization demonstrating leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of conserving wetlands. The Award will also recognize individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation.

"Ducks Unlimited Canada is truly honoured to have the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta present this award," said Mr. Carton. "We are pleased that it will recognize those who are actively securing a healthy environment for future generations of people and wildlife."

If you know a person or organization that has volunteered time to protect and preserve Alberta wetlands, nominate (PDF, 46 KB) him or her for the Alberta Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award. The nomination deadline for the award is May 9, 2007.

Wetlands provide essential habitat to approximately 600 wildlife species in Canada, including many of Canada's endangered species. These habitats also act as natural water filters, and serve to remove impurities from the water we drink and use every day.
