Conservation leaders wanted for prestigious provincial award
Edmonton, AB, February 14, 2008 — The 2008 Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award is looking for people and organizations in Alberta who have made a difference in wetlands conservation in their communities. This award recognizes those who have taken leadership roles in promoting public awareness of conserving wetlands and associated habitats in Alberta for the benefit of waterfowl, wildlife, and people. It is sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) and presented by the Honourable Norman Kwong, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.
"Alberta is a beautiful province and our valuable wetlands are a significant part of this beauty,” said Lieutenant Governor Kwong. “I know that there are many people in our communities who recognize the value that wetlands contribute to our quality of life and work very hard to conserve these important habitats. I am please that I am able to honour our conservation leaders with this award.”
Awarded annually, the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award is presented to an individual, company or organization demonstrating leadership in a project or activity that has contributed significantly to increasing public awareness and understanding of the importance of conserving wetlands. The award also recognizes individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation. The inaugural award was presented in 2007 to the Kimiwan Lake Naturalists for their efforts in protecting and enhancing Kimiwan Lake and associated habitat since the early 1980s. The Naturalists extensive efforts have resulted in Kimiwan Lake being recognized internationally for its wetlands and in particular its waterfowl and shorebird habitat.
"Ducks Unlimited Canada knows that there are many people in Alberta who work very hard to conserve our wetlands,” said C. Neil Downey, DUC President. “We want to thank these dedicated people and showcase their efforts to all Albertans.”
If you know a person or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to protect and preserve Alberta wetlands, nominate him or her for the 2008 Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award. Wetlands provide essential habitat to approximately 600 wildlife species in Canada, including many of Canada's endangered species. These habitats also act as natural water filters, and serve to remove impurities from the water we drink and use every day.
