Valuable wetlands returning to their former glory
Husky donation to be used to restore wetlands in Cold Lake area.
Cold Lake, Alta., Sept. 22, 2008– A recent donation from Husky Energy will help to secure, restore and enhance 320 acres of valuable wetlands and waterfowl habitat in the Cold Lake area.
The $125,000 donation will be directed to the Sawchuk Project, a Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) project located south of Cold Lake in the Beaver River Watershed. The project is also located near Husky’s Tucker Oil Sands Project. DUC has partnered with the Beaver River Watershed Planning and Advisory Council to work on wetland restoration projects within this watershed. The council is under the mandate of Alberta’s Water for Life strategy.
“The added benefit of this donation is that it targets an area that has been determined by the provincial government as an important water resource for Albertans,” says C. Neil Downey, DUC President. “Working with Husky on this project means that we can all benefit from ensuring the wetlands in this area remains healthy for our communities.”
Downey adds that DUC and the community are appreciative of Husky’s support to assist in restoring and protecting this wetland and the associated ecological values for generations to come.
This area is critically important for wildlife, waterfowl production, and spring and fall staging of waterfowl. Through this donation and matching funds from other funders, DUC was able to purchase two quarter sections, which will be restored and enhanced to their former glory - a thriving, productive wetland oasis. The project also includes uplands that will be enhanced through management and conversion to wildlife-friendly nesting cover. The work is expected to be completed in 2009.
“Husky is proud to support Ducks Unlimited Canada achieve its goal to acquire and restore wetlands in the Cold Lake area,” said John C.S. Lau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Husky Energy. “The wetlands are a shared natural resource that needs to be protected not only for future generations of waterfowl, but also for future generations of Albertans.”
Wetlands act as natural water filters, reduce the effects of floods and droughts, offer recreational opportunities, and provide homes for waterfowl and other wildlife.
