North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP)

DUC works with provincial partners on NAWMP projects in Alberta

The North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) is a partnership between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Its primary goal is to return waterfowl populations observed during the mid-1970’s levels.

In Alberta, the NAWMP is implemented by the Alberta NAWMP partnership whose many partners work together to conserve habitat, influence policy, fund research initiatives and communicate with the public. The partners include:

  • Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
  • Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development
  • Alberta Environment
  • Alberta Sustainable Resource Development
  • Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC)
  • Environment Canada
  • Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC)

DUC and NCC are the main delivery agents. The Alberta NAWMP partnership shares the same vision and mission as the Prairie Habitat Joint Venture: Healthy prairie, parkland and boreal landscapes that support sustainable ecological and economic benefits for society.

(Aythya valisineria)

The Canvasback casts a noble image with its mahogany colored head and “Roman nose.” However, its name comes from its bright white back, a better field mark in flight. These ducks are devoted deep divers that seldom stray into shallow wetlands. They are seen in much of Alberta in early spring and late fall.
