Cypress Hills Landscape

The Cypress Hills in southern Alberta are located along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border approximately 60 km southeast of Medicine Hat surrounding both the north and south sides of the Cypress Hills Provincial Park.

This landscape consists of large spans of grassland, aspen and spruce woodland, and wetlands and fresh water springs. It is a key habitat for a diversity of breeding birds, rare plants and large mammals such as moose, deer and elk; and a haven for sensitive grassland dependent species like the northern pintail, sharp-tailed grouse, upland sandpiper, northern leopard frog, swift fox and red-sided garter snake.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has designated Cypress Hills as a critical landscape in need of immediate conservation action. DUC’s objectives are to conserve and restore more than 700 wetland basins and approximately 23,000 acres of upland habitat with the cooperation of local landowners and the support of government and private donors. The estimated cost is 2 million over five years.
