Milk River Ridge Landscape
The Milk River Ridge is a spectacular landscape located in southeastern Alberta. Covering 2,700 km2, the rolling fescue grasslands, plateaus and escarpments provide critical pristine habitat for white-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, ring-necked pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse and many waterfowl species, including northern pintails.
DUC is currently working with local landowners to conserve these critical grasslands and their associated habitat for waterfowl. By encouraging landowners to retain cover on their land, restore wetlands and set aside conservation easements, we are making important strides to conserve priority habitats and establish long-term sustainable land use solutions for this area.
Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has designated Milk River Ridge as a critical landscape in need of immediate conservation action. DUC’s objectives are to conserve and restore more than 500 wetland basins and approximately 21,500 acres of upland habitat with the cooperation of local landowners and the support of government and private donors. The estimated cost is $4 million over five years.
