Sullivan Lake Landscape

  • The Sullivan Lake Landscape is made up of rolling, morainal aspen parkland with high wetland densities in the west and lacustrine flats in the east. Lakes in the area include Erskine, Shooting, Sullivan and Marion. This landscape is a primary recognized waterfowl area with a high density of waterfowl pairs that include 15 of the most common duck species.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has designated Sullivan Lake as a critical landscape in need of immediate conservation action. The risk of habitat loss is high to very high due to agriculture, petroleum development, road construction and rural subdivisions. development which often lead to wetland drainage or fill.  DUC hopes to counter the historically low uptake on securement programs through education and support such as the provision of nest tunnels, nest boxes, grants, winter wheat seed and other initiatives.

DUC has designated Sullivan Lake as a critical landscape in need of immediate conservation action. DUC’s objectives are to conserve and restore over 1,400 wetland basins and about 18,000 acres of upland habitat, work that will cost an estimated $1 million over five years. DUC is turning to local partners, land owners, government and private donors to partner with them on this conservation initiative.
