Land in central Alberta is currently hitting $1,500 to $2,000 per acre. Partnering on land purchase helps conservation organizations leverage critical resources and enables more land to be conserved and restored.
Kinvig Project
Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada jointly made the Kinvig Purchase near Pine Lake in 2005. This 640 acres of natural grassland contains prime wildlife habitat and 160 acres of wetlands. An important staging and breeding area for migrating waterfowl, it is located in one of DUC’s critical conservation areas.
The purchase involved two separate purchases of land owned by brothers David and Edgar Kinvig. The two conservation organizations are looking at both restoration projects and the potential for land-use exchange agreements for grazing; both efforts will contribute to the long term sustainability of this land.
