Policy
DUC is able to influence conservation policies at that local and provincial level that are targeted on both private and Crown land. Through a number of initiatives DUC is working towards wetland conservation best management practices and a provincial wetland conservation strategy.
Land Act in BC
DUC actively worked to amend the Land Act of BC. The amended Land Act in BC now allows non-governmental organizations to subdivide land for conservation purposes without having to go through a lengthy and costly subdivision process. The new amendment allows DUC to subdivide conservation lands within a two week period with only a legally defined registered survey plan
BC Trust for Public Lands
DUC played an instrumental role in the Provincial Government’s establishment of the BC Trust for Public Lands. The Province of BC has placed $8 million in the Trust Fund. DUC is one of the partners that will administer the annual interest and principal of approximately $1.6 million per year towards conservation initiatives throughout the province.
Wetland Stewardship Partnership
DUC is a member of the Wetland Stewardship Partnership. Comprised of both government and non-governmental representatives, the partners are preparing a Best Management Practices document for British Columbia to help guide land use decisions and wetland conservation. On behalf of the partnership, DUC submitted a document to the Premier’s office with a recommendation to harmonize water management within all provincial ministries.
Agricultural Policy Framework
DUC is working with the British Columbia Agricultural council to assist with the implementation and delivery of the Agricultural Policy Framework Environmental Farm Planning programs at high priority waterfowl areas throughout BC.
