Field Research

DUC’s conservation efforts are firmly guided by cutting-edge science and environmental and wetland research.

In BC, DUC continues to monitor waterfowl usage relating to priority habitats. Through ongoing research, biologists are able to identify the wetlands and associated habitats that require the greatest level of conservation.

Waterfowl & Wetland Surveys

Each year, DUC biologists conduct aerial surveys of selected eco-sections in British Columbia. The resulting data provides sample estimates of breeding waterfowl populations in the area.

Banding & Telemetry

DUC and DUInc biologists are currently partnering on a four-year research program studying waterfowl usage of wintering habitat along the Fraser River delta and North Puget Sound. Waterfowl are banded and fitted with temporary radio transmitters for monitoring.

Habitat Reports

DUC monitors wetland and upland habitat conditions in BC. The information is gathered into a habitat report that reflects seasonal trends relating to habitat and bird populations.

Decision Support Systems

Survey information is incorporated in our waterfowl prediction models called Decision Support Systems (DSS) The data is analyzed using DUC’s wetland database so that more can be learned about the relationships between species and their habitats and where best to focus conservation efforts.

Wetland Mapping

DUC needs detailed information about BC’s wetlands to continue managing wetland values appropriately. To meet this need, DUC has embarked on a wetland inventory and mapping project for the Interior of BC. The database will help DUC staff identify priority wetlands for conservation and will provide valuable information about wetlands to other land use planners.
