Ducks Unlimited Canada President Presents B.C. Government with a “Heritage Gold” Award

Victoria, B.C., January 1, 2004 – Ducks Unlimited Canada’s President Jack Messer is in Victoria today to present a “Heritage Gold” sponsor award to the Minister of Water, Land and Air Protection, Bill Barisoff, in his capacity as the Trustee of the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund. Accepting the award are Minister Barisoff and former Water, Land and Air Protection Minister Joyce Murray. The sponsorship award is given in recognition of contributions in excess of $500,000 to DUC supported projects. Mr. Gord Edwards, CEO of Ducks Unlimited Canada and Mr. Ian Barnett, Director of Regional Operations in British Columbia will be joining Mr. Messer for today’s presentation.

Ducks Unlimited Canada has a long history of significant joint investments with the HCTF to improve wetland habitats across the province. The Habitat Conservation Trust Fund is a valuable conservation partner. The HCTF provides funds to proponents to conserve, enhance and restore habitat for native fish and wildlife species across British Columbia.

Since 1987, the HCTF has invested over $3 million in joint habitat acquisition projects with DUC in locations across British Columbia, with partnership funding of $1.7 million coming from Ducks Unlimited.

Most recently, HCTF is funding a three year BC Wetland Partnership pilot project providing $450,000 in revenue that has allowed DUC to reallocate and leverage $1.5 million towards the conservation of key wetland and upland habitat.

Since 1981, the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund has invested over $70 million in enhancement and education projects and a further $12 million to acquire conservation lands across British Columbia. Annual surcharge revenue to the HCTF is approximately $5 million.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for waterfowl. DUC in British Columbia has invested over $90 million to date, has over 1400 volunteers and has a direct involvement (often through partnerships) in the management of almost 130,000 hectares of habitat in British Columbia.
