DUC Recognizes Community Conservation Champions

National Volunteer Week April 18 -24

Vancouver, B.C., April 13: Is your community a Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) community? Chances are that it is! Almost 70 per cent of British Columbia communities have a group of DUC volunteers actively dedicating their time to supporting DUC’s wetland conservation work.

In celebration of National Volunteer Week that runs April 18 th to 24 th, DUC is recognizing its volunteer conservation champions. In BC, 1,400 outdoor enthusiasts volunteer with DUC, organizing and hosting 90 community fundraising events and acting as ambassadors for wetland conservation.

Ask any DUC volunteer why they donate their time and you’re bound to hear that DUC lets people give back to nature. These people recognize the importance of saving Canada’s wetland habitats for the benefit of wildlife and people.

Herb and Shirley Carter from 108 Mile House are avid biologists and bird watchers. They have been DUC volunteers for the last 15 years. Herb recently retired from BC Parks after a distinguished career in the Cariboo, and now spends his free time reporting water levels and maintaining 50 nest boxes for waterfowl, bluebirds and swallows at a local DUC project within the 100 Mile House Greenbelt Area. Before retirement, Herb called on DUC to assist him with an extensive project at the Churn Creek Protected area. Herb was responsible for the development of three large lakes for waterfowl habitat, storage of water for irrigation and a water supply for power generation at the Conservation Ranch.

Through the daily efforts of Herb Carter and other volunteers around the province, DUC has made significant progress with over 1000 habitat conservation projects and more than 164,000 conserved acres of wetlands and associated habitats in British Columbia.

DUC conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people. To learn more about volunteer opportunities with DUC in BC, call Ducks Unlimited Canada at 1-866-384-DUCK (3825) or email volunteer@ducks.ca.
