Lieutenant Governor Presents Wetland Conservation Award

Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award recognizes contributions to wetland conservation in British Columbia

Victoria , April 13, 2005 – At a ceremony today, The Honourable Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, presented the province’s first Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award to Mr. Jack Bates for his outstanding contribution towards wetland conservation and education in BC.

Awarded annually and sponsored by Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC), the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award recognizes individuals or groups who have demonstrated leadership in a project or activity that has contributed to the public awareness of wetland conservation in British Columbia, and/or individuals and groups demonstrating outstanding volunteer service in assisting organizations that benefit wetland conservation.

“There were many very deserving nominees for this award, which bodes well for wetlands in British Columbia,” said Lieutenant Governor Iona Campagnolo. “These habitats are extremely valuable for both wildlife and people, and it’s good to know that people like Mr. Bates are working to conserve them.”

Jack Bates, through his activities and partnerships with agricultural and wildlife agencies, has supported the restoration and enhancement of the Fraser River Delta, the highest waterfowl priority area in British Columbia where over one million waterfowl use the area between October and May. Jack is the President of the BC Waterfowl Society, the Delta Farmers Institute and Past President of the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust.

“It’s a tremendous honour to receive the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award,” said Jack Bates. “Our wetlands are precious, so it’s important that we work to conserve them.”

DUC is proud to be the sponsor of the award, and to help recognize important contributions to conservation. “The establishment of the Lieutenant Governor’s Greenwing Conservation Award is a significant step in raising awareness for wetland conservation in British Columbia,” said George Reifel, Past President and Senior Provincial Director for DUC. “Our wetland habitats are being lost at a significant rate, so it’s important that we recognize those that are helping to make a difference in wetland conservation.”

DUC conserves, restores and manages wetlands and their associated habitats for the benefit of North America’s waterfowl. These habitats—nature’s water filters—also benefit other wildlife and people.
